Northern Leaders Pay Tribute to Late Elder Statesman, Paul Unongo

By Matthew Eloyi

Prominent northern leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, have paid glowing tributes to the late elder statesman and former Chairman of the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), Paul Unongo, who passed away two years ago.

The event, held in Makurdi, Benue State, was part of a week-long series of activities leading to the final internment of the highly respected statesman.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Inuwa Yahaya lauded Unongo’s life and legacy, describing him as a teacher, leader, and unifier.

“He came, he saw, and he conquered. He was more than just a leader; he was a teacher and mentor to many,” Yahaya said.

The NSGF Chairman extended condolences on behalf of the Northern Governors’ Forum, highlighting Unongo’s steadfast commitment to peace, security, and regional development.

“While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the enduring legacy he has left behind—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come,” he added.

Vice President Shettima described Unongo as a champion of regional harmony and a patriot who devoted his life to justice and national unity.

“He was a revered elder statesman whose life was dedicated to the greater good of Nigeria,” the Vice President said.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, praised Unongo for his deep patriotism and faith in a united Nigeria.

“He taught us what it means to love Nigeria and foster a united northern region,” Alia remarked.

The current Convener of the Northern Elders’ Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, offered a personal reflection on his over seven-decade friendship with Unongo, which began in secondary school in 1953.

“He lived and died for the cause of truth and justice. Losing him is a personal loss of a friend of over 70 years,” Abdullahi said.

Former Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, speaking on behalf of Benue elders, described Unongo as an intellectual giant with a broad, non-tribal perspective.

“He was an exciting person with a deep understanding of issues and a commitment to unity,” Ogbeh noted.

Similarly, former Senate President Bukola Saraki highlighted Unongo’s compassion and generosity, emphasising that his greatest wealth lay in his humanity and selflessness.

The tributes underscored Unongo’s lifelong dedication to regional development, justice, and unity, leaving behind an inspiring legacy for the North and Nigeria as a whole.
