The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has reminded corps members of their critical role in Nigeria’s future, urging them to remain patriotic and committed to national development.
He delivered the charge while addressing members of the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I during their swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Paiko, Niger State.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us, but you have more at stake as young, brilliant, and educated individuals with a bright future,” Nafiu told the corps members, stressing that the youth bear the greatest responsibility for the nation’s survival.
The NYSC boss assured the corps members of their welfare throughout the service year, noting that President Bola Tinubu had approved an upward review of their monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000.
He encouraged those posted to Niger State to make the most of their time at the orientation camp despite its current condition, disclosing that the state government was already constructing a permanent site to address the facility challenges.
“Subsequent batches will find a better camp, as I’m informed the state is building a permanent orientation camp,” he said.
Brig.-Gen. Nafiu also emphasised the importance of integrating into host communities, respecting local cultures, and contributing meaningfully through selfless service. He encouraged corps members to support educational development in their places of primary assignment, especially by helping others acquire knowledge.
In his remarks, Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, advised corps members to be agents of peace and national unity, and to shun acts that could disrupt public harmony. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Yahaya Gulbin-Boka, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to their safety and well-being.
“As a government, we’ll keep providing an enabling environment for you to thrive in the state,” Bago assured.
Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Niger State, Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, underscored the significance of the orientation course in fostering national integration. She called on corps members to remain disciplined, avoid drug abuse and cultism, and participate fully in all training programmes.
