Old Video Resurfaces: Nigerian Army Clarifies Context and Actions Taken

The Nigerian Army (NA) has addressed the recent circulation of an old video showing a soldier molesting a civilian for wearing a Nigerian Army Desert Camouflage uniform.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Major General.
Onyema Nwachukwu, Director, Army Public Relations, was made available to newsmen in Abuja.

The NA emphasises that this footage, which dates back to 2021, is being recirculated by individuals with either a lack of original content or a malicious intent to create unnecessary tension between the military and the civilian populace.

“The incident, which took place three years ago, was met with immediate and decisive action by the NA. The soldier involved was promptly arrested, tried, and appropriately punished for his unacceptable conduct, which stood in stark contrast to the core values of the Nigerian Army, including respect for others and their fundamental rights.

General Nwachukwu reiterated the NA’s stance on the unauthorised use of military camouflage. “The ban on unauthorised use of military camouflage remains in full effect.

“Only personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force are legally permitted to wear military camouflage,” Nwachukwu affirmed.

He added that this regulation is crucial as terrorists, insurgents, and other imposters have frequently exploited the misuse of military camouflage to commit heinous crimes against unsuspecting members of the public, posing significant security threats.

The general said that the Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

“The public is urged to disregard the misleading video and remain vigilant against any attempts to sow discord and tension within the country.

The NA’s proactive measures and commitment to justice underscore its dedication to maintaining order and protecting the rights of every Nigerian citizen.
