Over 3,000 athletes have registered to participate in the 2024 Anti-Corruption Half Marathon, slated for December 7 in Abuja.

The event, now in its fifth edition, aims to raise awareness about the ongoing fight against corruption and the importance of collective action in tackling the menace.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Jacob Onu, the National Coordinator of the marathon, highlighted the symbolic nature of the race in the battle against corruption and substance abuse among athletes.

“The fight against corruption is not a one-off battle but a continuous one that requires perseverance and endurance,” Onu stated.

“This is why the marathon is symbolic; without perseverance and endurance, one can’t start and finish a marathon,” he added.

Onu revealed that the top prize for both male and female winners is N1 million, with the first and second runners-up receiving N700,000 and N500,000 respectively.

Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Maikano, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), announced that OSMA will fully participate in the marathon, underscoring the significance of the cause.

“In my capacity as the president of OSMA, I will ensure that the African military participates in this marathon. We will use the upcoming African Military Games in Abuja to create awareness and invite our colleagues from Niger, Ghana, Mali, and other African countries,” Maikano said.

The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, represented by Nigeria Weightlifting Federation President Abdul Ibrahim, called on stakeholders to support the marathon, noting that such events play a crucial role in talent discovery for the country.

The 21.25 km race will begin at Eagle Square at 7 a.m., pass through the National Stadium, and conclude at the Unity Fountain. Top government officials, members of the National Assembly Anti-Corruption Committee, and other prominent figures are expected to flag off the event.
