Police Debunk Viral Video Alleging Terror Attack in Abuja, Arrest Suspect
The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as false a viral video circulating on social media claiming an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja, assuring residents that no such incident occurred.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Force described the video as “entirely false, misleading, and malicious,” noting that it was deliberately manipulated using unrelated footage sourced online to create panic and undermine public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the content was intentionally fabricated to incite fear and disrupt public peace in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a swift response, operatives of the Force arrested a suspect, identified as Pam Joseph, in connection with the creation and dissemination of the video. The arrest followed credible intelligence gathering and digital forensic analysis linking the individual to the viral content.
The police reiterated that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it does not extend to spreading false information capable of threatening national security and public order.
Citizens were urged to verify information before sharing on social media and to avoid engaging in activities that could incite panic or disorder.
The suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Force further assured Nigerians of its continued commitment to maintaining public safety, adding that it will sustain surveillance of digital platforms and take decisive action against individuals found guilty of spreading misinformation.
