Romanian Cities Introduce ‘Health Ticket’ Kiosks Offering Free Bus Rides for Squats

Several cities across Romania, including Cluj-Napoca, have launched an innovative public transport initiative that allows passengers to earn a free bus ticket by completing 20 squats. The program uses specially designed “health ticket” kiosks installed at select transit points.

The kiosks are equipped with motion sensors and cameras that verify the exercise in real time before issuing a valid transport ticket. Once the squats are correctly completed, the system prints a ticket that can be used immediately for travel.

Transport authorities say the initiative is aimed at promoting everyday physical activity while keeping public transportation accessible. Officials emphasized that participation is entirely voluntary and designed to complement, not replace, existing ticket options.

Elderly passengers, people with disabilities, and other exempt groups continue to receive free or subsidized transport under current policies, ensuring the program does not create barriers for vulnerable commuters.

Public reaction has been largely positive, with supporters praising the idea as a creative way to combine health awareness with urban mobility. City officials say the pilot program will be monitored closely, and if successful, could be expanded to more locations nationwide.
