Sallah Under Guard: Troops Turn the Tide as Communities Defy Terror Threats
By Matthew Eloyi
Residents in parts of Borno and Imo States marked this year’s Eid-el-Fitr under the watchful presence of determined Nigerian troops, whose sustained operations have continued to push back insurgent threats and restore a sense of normalcy in volatile areas.
Despite earlier warnings from insurgents who vowed to overrun Ngoshe and stage Sallah prayers at its central mosque, the day unfolded peacefully. The failed threat became a turning point, as troops not only secured the town but also joined worshippers in prayer—a symbolic gesture underscoring renewed confidence in security efforts.
Military reports indicate that the attempted show of force by terrorists was met with swift reinforcement, backed by aerial surveillance and actionable intelligence. The intervention led to the neutralisation of several insurgents and effectively dismantled their plans before they could materialize.
“As at Sallah day, Ngoshe and adjoining communities remained calm, with residents observing prayers without any incident,” the report stated.
The presence of troops at the Ngoshe central mosque during prayers served as a powerful counter-message to insurgent propaganda, highlighting the government’s firm grip on the area.
Authorities praised the cooperation of local communities, noting that vigilance among residents played a key role in maintaining stability. Citizens were also urged to ignore misinformation capable of weakening national security efforts, as operations continue to deepen across affected regions.
Meanwhile, in Imo State, soldiers operating under the 82 Division have maintained pressure on criminal enclaves in Orsu Local Government Area. Despite encountering multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), troops have steadily cleared key strongholds, demonstrating resilience in the face of persistent threats.
At a Special Sallah Luncheon in Mother Valley, the Chief of Army Staff, represented at the event, acknowledged the troops’ efforts and sacrifices.
“The troops remain in high spirits and have shown commendable resilience in recent operations, particularly in clearing identified strongholds in spite of IED threats,” the report stated.
Military leadership also highlighted growing collaboration with other security agencies and local communities, which has significantly enhanced operational outcomes. In a further boost to morale, the delegation visited injured soldiers, delivering goodwill messages and expressing appreciation for their service.
“The COAS delegation also visited wounded soldiers receiving treatment, conveying goodwill messages and appreciation for their sacrifices, a gesture that further boosted troop morale,” it added.
