Scientists Discover Bee Venom Compound That Destroys Aggressive Breast Cancer Cells

Scientists have identified a promising anti-cancer compound in bee venom that could pave the way for new targeted therapies against aggressive forms of breast cancer.

The compound, known as Melittin, is the primary toxin found in bee stings. Researchers at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research discovered that melittin can destroy aggressive breast cancer cells in laboratory conditions in under 60 minutes.

According to the study, published in npj Precision Oncology, the compound works by breaking down the membranes of cancer cells, effectively causing them to self-destruct. It showed particularly strong results against triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most difficult forms of the disease to treat with existing therapies.

Researchers also found that melittin demonstrated a high level of selectivity, targeting cancer cells while largely sparing healthy ones. In addition, it was observed to block key chemical signals that enable cancer cells to grow and spread.

While the findings mark a significant breakthrough, scientists caution that this does not mean bee stings can treat cancer. Instead, the discovery opens new possibilities for developing precise, targeted drug therapies derived from natural compounds.

The research highlights how naturally occurring substances may hold untapped potential in advancing modern medicine, offering hope for more effective cancer treatments in the future.
