Senate Moves to Classify Kidnapping as Terrorism, Approves Death Penalty for Convicted Offenders

The Nigerian Senate has resolved to classify kidnapping as an act of terrorism, paving the way for amendments to the Terrorism (Prevention) Act that will impose the maximum death penalty on anyone convicted of the crime.

The decision was reached during Wednesday’s plenary session on November 26, with lawmakers insisting that the rising wave of abductions across the country demands the strongest possible legal deterrent. Under the proposed amendment, the death penalty will be mandatory once guilt is established in any kidnapping case.

Nigeria has faced unrelenting security challenges, particularly from armed bandits who raid villages, kill residents, and abduct victims for ransom.

The latest incident occurred on Monday, November 24, when armed men attacked Biresawa village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State, abducting at least eight people. Sources said the attack took place around 11 p.m., with the assailants reportedly entering through a neighbouring village, Tsundu.

A relative of one of the victims, Kabiru Usman, said local residents attempted to repel the attackers but were overpowered by their superior firepower.

In Niger State, the government has expressed “deep sadness” over the kidnapping of pupils of St. Mary’s School in Agwara Local Government Area. Authorities said security agencies are assessing the situation while investigations and rescue operations are underway.

Usman noted that the state government had earlier suspended all construction activities and ordered the temporary closure of boarding schools in the senatorial district as a precaution. He added that security agencies are in close communication with relevant stakeholders and will provide continuous updates.

The recent spike in abductions includes the kidnapping of worshippers in Kwara State and students in Kebbi State. However, security forces have since secured the release of the victims in both cases.

The Senate’s latest move signals a tougher national stance on kidnapping, as lawmakers push for stricter punishments to curb the growing threat.
