In a statement released today, Hon Sheikh Al Moustapha Kouyateh, the presidential candidate of Liberia First Movement, expressed deep concern over Liberia’s recent decision to vote against the United Nations resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. Liberia was the only African nation among the 10 countries opposing the ceasefire, a move that contradicts the global call for peace and stability in the region.

Facing overwhelming support for the ceasefire from more than 152 countries, “Liberia’s stance is not only disappointing but also troubling. The ceasefire call seeks to preserve human lives, restore peace, and protect innocent civilians amid the ongoing violence in Israel and Palestine.”
Under President Weah’s leadership, Liberia’s decision is viewed as a step in the wrong direction, challenging the cherished values of peace, justice, and humanity. “There is no justification for perpetuating violence and contributing to the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire.
Hon Sheikh Al Moustapha Kouyateh calls upon both conflicting parties to heed the international call for a ceasefire. It is crucial that all parties recognise the urgency of the situation and work towards a peaceful resolution. The continuation of violence only results in further loss and devastation, and there is a collective responsibility to end the cycle of suffering and destruction,” He pleaded.
Also, “I urge Liberia to reconsider her position and align with the global community in supporting the ceasefire,” he said, adding that the call is for solidarity with innocent lives affected by the conflict and a shared commitment to a future where peace and co-existence prevail.
