Suspected Smugglers Kill Customs Officer in Ogun as NCS Seizes ₦3.32bn Worth of Illegal Goods

A Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officer has been killed in Ogun State following an attack by suspected smugglers during an anti-smuggling operation, marking another tragic loss in the Service’s fight against cross-border crime.

The incident occurred as operatives of the Customs enforcement unit carried out coordinated operations across key smuggling routes in the state. According to Customs sources, the team came under attack from suspected smugglers while attempting to intercept contraband items.

Despite the deadly assault, the operatives successfully seized illegal goods valued at approximately ₦3.32 billion. The intercepted items included foreign parboiled rice, smuggled vehicles, hard drugs and other prohibited products.

The Nigeria Customs Service described the fallen officer as a brave operative who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, reaffirming its commitment to combating smuggling and protecting Nigeria’s economy.

Authorities said investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing, while security has been reinforced along border corridors and flashpoints in Ogun State.

The Service also urged members of the public to support law enforcement agencies with timely information, stressing that collaboration remains critical in curbing smuggling and related criminal activities.
