Nigeria gathered to honour the life and legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari at the official launch of his biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, a book that chronicles his journey, leadership philosophy, achievements, and enduring impact on the nation.
Speaking at the event, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid glowing tribute to the late leader, describing Buhari as a man of quiet strength, discipline, and uncommon grace rooted in service to the country. He extended heartfelt condolences to the former First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari, her children, and grandchildren, assuring them that the prayers and gratitude of Nigerians remain with the family.
President Tinubu noted that Buhari’s true measure was not defined by power or privilege, but by what endured after office—his reputation for integrity, modest living, and the belief that public office is a sacred trust rather than a means for personal gain.

Reflecting on their shared political journey, Tinubu described Buhari as a brother, friend, and partner with whom he navigated some of Nigeria’s most challenging political moments. He recalled how their coalition achieved a historic milestone in 2015 by unseating an incumbent government, reshaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape and giving rise to what has become one of Africa’s fastest-growing political parties.
According to the President, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari offers an honest account of Buhari’s life, acknowledging both achievements and shortcomings, and serving as a vital reference for future leaders. He emphasized that the book is not meant to glorify slogans, but to preserve memory and extract lessons for nation-building.
Tinubu outlined four enduring pillars of Buhari’s legacy highlighted in the book: humility, security, vision, and social justice. He noted Buhari’s preference for simplicity, his commitment to strengthening national security, his focus on long-term infrastructure development, and his belief in social interventions that protected the poor and vulnerable.
The President stressed that a legacy only remains alive when successors choose to build upon it, adding that Buhari’s love for Nigeria was evident in his consistency, honesty, and respect for democratic values—even by critics who disagreed with his policies.
He also praised the author for documenting Buhari’s life with depth and balance, ensuring the book would reach schools, libraries, and young Nigerians seeking inspiration on leadership and service.
Concluding his remarks, Tinubu prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the former President and comfort for his family, reaffirming that Buhari’s impact would continue to guide Nigeria’s journey.
“Though he is no longer with us,” Tinubu said, “his legacy lives on—not in words alone, but in disciplined governance, compassion, and resolve.”
The launch of From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari marked both a moment of reflection and a call to future generations to lead with integrity, restraint, and dedication to the nation.
