By Matthew Eloyi
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration seeking elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, announced in a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.
According to the circular signed by SGF George Akume and issued by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the order applies to a wide range of political office holders. These include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants to the president, as well as directors-general and chief executives of federal government agencies, commissions, parastatals, and government-owned companies.
All affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office within the stipulated deadline if they intend to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for elective offices.
The President said the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and fostering credible electoral processes, urging all concerned appointees to strictly adhere to the directive.
