Tinubu Unveils Plan to Strengthen Police Training, Intelligence, Welfare

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to deepen investment in police training, intelligence gathering, and modern law enforcement systems as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution.

The President made this known during the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession held in Abuja, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Tinubu emphasised that national progress is impossible without a secure environment, stressing that the government has a moral obligation to equip and support security agencies.

He stated that the administration would sustain reforms through investments in capacity development, modern equipment, advanced intelligence systems, and improved welfare for police personnel.

“We are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time,” the President said.

Highlighting the sacrifices of security personnel, Tinubu noted that the nation’s safety depends on those who remain vigilant, often without recognition. He described security as the “first currency of progress” and called for stronger support for law enforcement institutions.

The President also paid tribute to fallen officers, describing their sacrifice as part of the nation’s enduring legacy, while commending serving personnel for their resilience and dedication.

He urged officers to uphold professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rule of law, stressing that the police uniform represents a commitment to service rather than power.

Tinubu further emphasised the importance of community policing, noting that trust and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement are critical to tackling insecurity.

In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, acknowledged public expectations and pledged to build a more disciplined, accountable, and intelligence-driven police force.

He assured that the current leadership would support officers who uphold professionalism while taking firm action against misconduct.

The event featured a ceremonial parade, tactical displays, and participation from various police units and cadets, marking the grand finale of the 2026 National Police Day celebration.

Dignitaries at the occasion included top government officials, service chiefs, former Inspectors-General of Police, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of key institutions, all reaffirming support for ongoing police reforms in Nigeria.
