Tinubu Vows Nigeria Will Defeat Terrorism, Describes Insecurity as Unacceptable
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday declared that Nigeria will overcome terrorism and banditry, describing the persistent security challenges as “unacceptable” and alien to the nation’s culture and values.
The President made the declaration while opening the Second National Economic Council (NEC) Conference at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, assuring Nigerians of his administration’s firm resolve to strengthen security forces and restore peace across affected communities.
“I promise you here that I’ll play my part. Seven zones of mechanisation are coming. I promise Nigerians that this will be delivered, and I am here again to further find ways to strengthen our security forces and defeat terrorism,” Tinubu said.
He added that insecurity remains a major concern for his administration, stressing that the fight against terrorism and banditry has been a collective burden on national leadership.
“That, I promise you, is what has kept all of us sleepless at night, but I assure you we will win with determination and resilience. We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry. It’s not part of our culture. It’s foreign to us,” the President stated.
Tinubu described insecurity as a serious economic setback and called for collective action to achieve swift and lasting solutions. He commended the governors of Borno, Katsina and Kaduna states, alongside others, for their efforts in safeguarding lives, property, and national stability.
Welcoming governors, ministers, lawmakers, development partners and private sector leaders to the two-day conference themed “Delivering Inclusive Growth and Sustainable National Development: The Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030,” the President said the gathering reflected a shared commitment to national progress.
He praised the National Economic Council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing it as a cornerstone of fiscal federalism and economic governance.
Highlighting achievements under his administration, Tinubu said ongoing economic reforms have helped stabilise the economy and restore investor confidence, noting that Nigeria’s monetary policy has gained global recognition. He commended the Central Bank of Nigeria, under Governor Yemi Cardoso, for restoring confidence in the financial system.
According to the President, state and local governments now receive more predictable federal allocations, improving their ability to pay salaries, invest in infrastructure and deliver essential services. He also cited progress in transportation, power, digital connectivity, housing and irrigation, as well as expanded social investment programmes targeting vulnerable groups under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu explained that the Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030 represents the next phase of Nigeria’s development journey, anchored on inclusive growth, economic diversification, private sector-led expansion and climate resilience. He stressed that effective implementation at state and local government levels would be critical to its success.
“The task before us is challenging, but the opportunity is historic,” the President said, expressing confidence that resolutions from the conference would drive agricultural diversification, including dairy farming, livestock investment and ranching.
In his remarks, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, praised the NEC for its contributions to economic gains and expressed optimism that the conference would help build consensus towards achieving a trillion-dollar economy.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, said the conference comes at a crucial time as Nigeria undertakes a deliberate economic reset. He pledged the support of state governments in delivering inclusive growth and sustainable development under the Renewed Hope National Development Plan.
