Trump Sparks Outrage in France After Mocking Macron, Wife

U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn sharp criticism in France after mocking French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during remarks at a private lunch.

Trump reportedly imitated a French accent and claimed that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly,” while also criticising NATO allies over their stance on the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

The comments quickly sparked backlash across the French political spectrum, with leaders condemning the tone and timing of the remarks amid ongoing global tensions.

President of France’s lower house of parliament, Yael Braun-Pivet, described the comments as inappropriate.

“Honestly, it’s not up to par,” she said, stressing that world leaders should focus on serious global issues rather than mockery, particularly as conflicts continue to affect millions of lives.

Even critics of Macron voiced disapproval. Manuel Bompard, a leading figure in the opposition France Unbowed party, said Trump’s remarks crossed the line.

“You are aware of the extent of my disagreements with the president, but for Donald Trump to speak to him like that and to speak of his wife in such a manner – I find that absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

French media also reacted strongly, with conservative daily Le Figaro describing the episode as “another controversial outburst” from the U.S. leader.

Trump’s comments reportedly referenced a 2025 viral video involving the Macrons, which the French president had previously dismissed as a misinterpretation and part of a disinformation narrative.

In addition to the personal remarks, Trump criticised NATO, describing it as a “paper tiger” and suggesting the alliance might not respond effectively in a major global conflict.

The latest comments add to growing tensions between Washington and its European allies, particularly as debates continue over military cooperation and responses to the evolving crisis in the Middle East.
