UK-Based Nigerian Mother Recounts Horrific Domestic Abuse as Children Were Forced to Watch

A UK-based Nigerian mother, Oluwatoyin Haleemah, has continued to recount her harrowing experience of domestic violence during her appearance on the Talk To B Podcast on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. Haleemah, who is the sister of gospel singer and prophet Tope Alabi, described in painful detail the brutality she endured and how her children were repeatedly forced to witness the assaults.

She said the violence began shortly after she challenged her partner about his increasingly controlling behaviour.
“That’s when my husband’s beating started. He started hitting me,” she recalled.

According to Haleemah, the abuse soon escalated far beyond arguments or minor physical altercations.
“And when he start hitting me, he will call my kids and say, ‘See, this is the time for me to beat your mom. And as I’m beating your mom, this is the phone I want you to call the police on me.’”

She stressed that the attacks were severe, violent, and deliberate:
“It’s not slapping o. It’s not husband and wife slapping each other. This is like banging my head on the wall. Banging my head or kicking me on the floor… and my kids will start crying.”

Haleemah said her partner insisted that the children remain present throughout the violence: “My kids will be there. He wants them to be watching. In the UK, not in Nigeria.”

After each attack, she said, he would apologise and promise to seek help.
“He will start begging, then he will say he will go for therapy. He said he didn’t even know what got into him to beat me. And I said okay.”

But the cycle continued.
