The union had been banned in 2016 following protests over welfare issues and unrest, leaving the institution without an elected student body for a decade.
Following the decision, the university conducted fresh elections, which saw the emergence of Bolaji Akinpelu of the Faculty of Arts as SUG President — the first in 10 years.
At the inauguration ceremony, the university described the move as a return to responsible unionism and pledged its support for the newly elected leadership.
The development has been widely welcomed by students and stakeholders, who view it as a significant step toward restoring representation and strengthening communication between students and the university management.
However, expectations remain high for the new SUG leadership to maintain stability on campus while effectively advocating for students’ welfare and interests.
