US Senate Committee Blasts Nigerian Government, Vows Accountability Over Rising Terror Attacks
The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee has criticised the Nigerian government for what it described as its repeated failure to protect schoolchildren and vulnerable citizens from terrorist attacks and mass abductions.
In a statement posted on the Committee’s official X handle, Chairman Senator Jim Risch condemned the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, particularly the persistent targeting of students by jihadist and criminal groups.
“Nigeria has long failed to protect its schoolchildren from jihadist and criminal abductions, and little has changed. Students, especially girls, remain targets for enslavement, conversion, and ransom,” Risch said.

He added that as the United States continues its engagement with the Nigerian government, “we will continue to hold them accountable” for the protection of its citizens.
The Committee’s remarks come just 48 hours after terrorists invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State. During the attack, the gunmen killed the school principal and abducted about 25 schoolgirls, whisking them away to an unknown location.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools across northern Nigeria, where mass abductions have repeatedly occurred over the past decade.
