2026 FCT Area Council Polls: Low Turnout Recorded in Garki, Asokoro

Voting in parts of Garki and Asokoro during the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections was marked by low turnout, as several polling units recorded sparse voter presence throughout the exercise.

Party agents in the affected areas attributed the situation to the strict no-movement policy enforced during the polls, arguing that it discouraged many residents from coming out to vote. According to them, movement restrictions may have created uncertainty, particularly among elderly voters and those unfamiliar with the guidelines.

Some residents also expressed concerns over newly created polling units with very few registered voters. They alleged that the units were unfamiliar and described them as “alien,” raising questions about their locations and voter distribution.

One voter noted that the disputed polling units were first introduced during the 2023 general elections, adding that their existence has continued to generate suspicion and confusion among members of the community.

Despite the concerns, voting proceeded peacefully in the areas visited, with electoral officials present and security personnel maintaining order. Authorities are yet to officially respond to the complaints regarding turnout and polling unit arrangements.
