Military Professionalism Hinged on Training, Affirms – Gen Shaibu

Major General W. Shaibu, the Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE) Operation HADIN KAI, underscored the pivotal role of training in military professionalism. His remarks came during the conclusion of the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Mitigation and Operation Planning Training, organised by the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT), for staff officers of OPHK.

During the closing ceremony held at the Theatre Training School in Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, on March 22, 2024, Gen Shaibu emphasised the significance of training in line with the Command Philosophy of Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen TA Lagbaja, stating, “Training is the cornerstone of military professionalism.”

Highlighting the persistent threat posed by IEDs in the theatre of operations, Gen Shaibu stressed the importance of equipping officers with the necessary skills to counter this menace effectively. He expressed gratitude to BMATT and COMERAOME for their dedication in imparting knowledge and practical skills to the officers.

In his welcome address, Brigadier General HI Audu, the Theatre Training Officer, reiterated the purpose of the training to enhance officers’ capabilities in IED mitigation and operation planning.

Lead facilitator Jim Carr provided insights into the course, which covered topics such as the making of IEDs, understanding adversaries’ psychology and tactics to identify and mitigate threats effectively.

Expressing appreciation on behalf of the trainees, Lieutenant Colonel B. Mohammed assured that they would apply the knowledge gained in the field, acknowledging the Theatre Commander’s commitment to their training.

The event featured the presentation of certificates and group photographs, with dignitaries including Deputy Theatre Commander Maj Gen KE Chigbu, Acting GOC 7 Division/Commander Sector 1 OPHK, and representatives from BMATT and British Defence Staff West Africa in attendance.
