Edo State is gearing up for its crucial governorship election on Saturday, with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, making a pivotal visit to assess the operational readiness of the Armed Forces and security agencies.

During his meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki, General Musa emphasised the military’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the people of Edo to cast their votes.

The CDS reassured the governor, stating, “The Armed Forces and security agencies will act professionally during the election, and I want to guarantee an enabling environment for every citizen to vote for their preferred candidate.”

He further warned that any individuals with disruptive intentions should reconsider their actions, as the military would not tolerate any breach of peace or illegal possession of arms.

General Musa underscored the directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mandating the military to ensure that this election is the most peaceful in the state’s history.

He urged the people of Edo to turn out in large numbers, assuring them of their safety while highlighting that the police would handle general security, with military forces providing additional support.

Addressing the troops, General Musa reminded them of their duty to remain professional throughout the process, noting that erring personnel would face immediate consequences through a standby court-martial system.

Governor Obaseki expressed gratitude for the CDS’s visit, noting the reassurance it brought to the state.

He acknowledged the exceptional security support provided by the military, particularly the 2 Division, and emphasised the strategic importance of the Edo election to national security. He pledged continued support from the state to enhance security collaboration with the armed forces.

In a subsequent meeting with key stakeholders, General Musa highlighted the international attention focused on the election, urging all parties to ensure a free and fair process.

He also revealed the deployment of additional security mechanisms to monitor security personnel and ensure accountability during the election.

Edo is set for a historic election, with security agencies poised to uphold peace and protect the integrity of the process.
