Aduke Gomez Honoured with Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Irish Abroad

Nigerian writer Aduke Gomez has been named as one of the recipients of the 2024 Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Irish Abroad. Gomez, known for her significant contributions to literature, joins a list of notable honourees celebrated for their exceptional work in various fields.

This prestigious award, which recognizes the impact of individuals making a difference within Irish communities globally, was announced by Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin. Gomez’s inclusion highlights the global reach and influence of her literary work, which has resonated with audiences far beyond Nigeria.

Other distinguished recipients include footballer Seamus Coleman, designer Orla Kiely, and playwright Rosalind Scanlon. The honorees were recognized for their contributions to the arts, sports, culture, and community service. Additional awardees include Prof. Enrico Terrinoni, Sr. Teresa McKeon, Stella O’Leary, Mary O’Neil, Patrick Leahy, and Pam O’Mahony.

The awards will be presented by President Michael D. Higgins at a ceremony in Áras an Uachtaráin in January 2025.

Irish people overseas continue to make vital contributions to their communities and on the international stage,” Mr. Martin said. “The Presidential Distinguished Service Award acknowledges the connection between the work of the recipients and our values as a nation, strengthening the ties between Ireland and the Diaspora.”

The 2024 recipients represent diverse fields such as arts, culture, sport, charitable works, business, and advocacy for peace, inclusion, and equality. Gomez’s recognition reflects her continued influence and engagement with international cultural and literary circles, making her a prominent figure in the global arts community.
