Defence Headquarters Debunks Rumors of Acting Chief of Army Staff Appointment

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed speculations circulating in some media outlets about the alleged appointment of a new acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). Contrary to the rumors, no such appointment has been made within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

In a statement issued and signed by Brig- General Tukur Gusau Director Defence Information and made available to Newsmen in Abuja on Monday to clarify the situation, the DHQ emphasized that Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the current Chief of Army Staff, is on a scheduled annual leave.

“The Chief of Army Staff is enjoying a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave, and all Service Chiefs continue to perform their duties as mandated by the Constitution of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the statement read.

To ensure seamless operations, Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, has been providing regular briefings to the COAS in line with standard procedures.

The DHQ assured the public that Lieutenant General Lagbaja is “hail and hearty” and will soon resume his duties upon completing his leave.

Addressing the spread of misinformation, the DHQ urged media organizations to verify their sources before publishing news, warning against the dissemination of fake information.

“We encourage the public and the media to seek clarification from the appropriate authorities to avoid spreading false news,” the DHQ advised.

The DHQ also condemned a viral video advocating for military intervention in the government, labeling such calls as treasonous and unconstitutional.

It reaffirmed the AFN’s unwavering commitment to upholding Nigeria’s democracy and supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The Defence Headquarters credited the current relative peace in the country to the combined efforts of the military leadership and the support from the President.

In its statement, the DHQ highlighted that the AFN and other security agencies are on high alert to address any threats to Nigeria’s constitutional order, vowing to take necessary action against individuals or groups advocating for unconstitutional changes.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued support and prayers, assuring the public that victory over the nation’s challenges is assured.

“The military remains focused on its statutory duty of safeguarding the country’s integrity, and we remain loyal to the democratic values that bind our nation together,” the CDS stated.
