Lawmaker Arrested for Alleged Assault on Driver in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, following allegations that he assaulted a driver in Abuja.

The incident has raised concerns over alleged misconduct by public officials.

FCT Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed Ikwechegh’s presence at the Maitama Police Station, where he is currently being questioned in relation to the incident.

The police statement revealed that the complaint was filed by a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who reported that while delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh, a disagreement over the method of delivery escalated.

“During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted,” the statement noted.

The FCT Police Command also voiced its concern over Hon. Ikwechegh’s alleged dismissive remarks toward law enforcement following the incident.

After allegedly striking the driver, he reportedly stated, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” a comment seen as showing disregard for police authority.

In response, the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation.

“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement affirmed.

As inquiries proceed, the FCT Police Command assures the public of its commitment to upholding justice and accountability.
