UN, EU Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Development Cooperation in Nigeria

The United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation to address Nigeria’s development challenges and improve the impact of joint projects across the country.

The commitment was reiterated at a high-level EU-UN Strategic Partnership Meeting held at the UN House in Abuja, bringing together EU ambassadors and heads of UN agencies to strengthen local development cooperation.

Speaking at the meeting, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Mohammed Fall, and the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, emphasised the need for improved project delivery, stronger partnerships and more effective implementation of development initiatives.

Fall described the EU as one of the UN’s key global partners, noting that their collaboration supports projects valued at approximately $400 million in Nigeria.

He reaffirmed the two organisations’ shared commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and humanitarian assistance, while calling for stronger engagement from the Nigerian government and increased domestic resource mobilisation to support development priorities.

Mignot identified education, governance, democracy, human rights and security as priority areas for continued cooperation between the EU and UN in Nigeria.

The meeting also examined ways to improve project implementation, strengthen collaboration between EU member states and UN agencies, and maximise the impact of joint development programmes.

Both organisations underscored the importance of coordinated action and sustained partnerships in supporting Nigeria’s development priorities and delivering tangible benefits to communities across the country.
