Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Technology-Driven Security, Armed Forces Modernisation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deploying emerging technologies and strengthening the capacity of the Armed Forces to tackle evolving security threats and safeguard the lives of Nigerians.

The President made the commitment on Monday during the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 and the African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking on the theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” President Tinubu said his administration is modernising the Armed Forces through investments in advanced military hardware, intelligence-driven operations and personnel capacity development.

He stressed that the government remains committed to countering contemporary security challenges through the adoption of emerging technologies that will enhance operational planning and combat readiness across all theatres of operation.

The President also highlighted research and development as a key pillar of the administration’s security strategy, noting that efforts are underway to strengthen indigenous innovation and local defence production.

He said the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), alongside strategic partnerships such as the African Land Forces Forum, reflects the government’s determination to build a self-reliant defence industry capable of producing military equipment locally while creating employment opportunities.

President Tinubu described the African Land Forces Forum as a significant platform for strengthening defence diplomacy, promoting knowledge sharing and enhancing regional cooperation in addressing security challenges across Africa.

He commended the organisers, Great Minds Event Management, for partnering with the Nigerian Army to host the maiden edition of the forum, noting that the initiative would boost Nigeria’s leadership in defence collaboration on the continent.

Paying tribute to members of the Armed Forces, the President described them as symbols of patriotism whose sacrifices continue to contribute to national and regional peace and stability.

He assured families of fallen military personnel that the nation would continue to honour their sacrifices and remain committed to their welfare.

Earlier, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara described the hosting of the event in Port Harcourt as a reflection of the prevailing peace and stability in the state. He also called for improved welfare and support for military personnel.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens despite evolving security threats.

He noted that the changing security landscape has continued to shape the Army’s operational strategies while commending officers and soldiers serving in various theatres of operation for their courage, professionalism and sacrifices.

Lieutenant General Shaibu also appreciated President Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Army and pledged the loyalty and commitment of officers and men to the nation’s leadership.

The event featured the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards, military displays and tactical demonstrations by various formations of the Nigerian Army.

Among the dignitaries present were former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon; former President Olusegun Obasanjo; members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, service chiefs, retired military officers and other distinguished guests.
