Over 1.56 Million Nigerians Complete Voter Registration Exercise – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 1,565,873 Nigerians successfully completed voter registration as of June 26, 2026, under the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

According to statistics released by the commission on Tuesday in Abuja, the figure represents registrations recorded at the end of the seventh week of Phase III of the exercise.

INEC said the total comprises 620,933 citizens who completed the online pre-registration process and 944,940 who registered physically at designated centres across the country.

The commission, however, noted that the figures remain provisional and will be subjected to a comprehensive data clean-up during the period for public claims and objections before the deployment of the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to eliminate duplicate registrations.

A state-by-state breakdown showed that Kano State recorded the highest number of new registrants with 118,207, representing 7.55 per cent of the national total. Lagos State followed with 78,360 registrants, while Delta State recorded 76,395.

INEC also disclosed that voter registration has been temporarily suspended in Ekiti and Osun states following the recently concluded governorship election in Ekiti and ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun, in line with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The commission’s data showed that women accounted for the majority of new registrants, with 821,276 registrations, representing 52.45 per cent, while 744,597 men registered, accounting for 47.55 per cent.

Young people aged 18 to 34 years dominated the registration exercise, with 1,082,985 registrants, representing 69.16 per cent of the total. They were followed by those aged 35 to 49 years, who accounted for 331,376 registrations or 21.16 per cent.

By occupation, students formed the largest category of new registrants with 384,093, representing 24.53 per cent, followed by business owners with 333,539 and farmers and fishermen with 273,627.

The commission also reported that 18,919 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) registered during the exercise.

INEC encouraged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to complete their registration through the commission’s online portal or at designated CVR centres nationwide to enable them to participate in future elections.
