Nigeria Refutes Niger Military Leader’s Baseless Allegations

The Federal Government of Nigeria has categorically dismissed allegations made by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the military leader of Niger Republic, claiming collaboration between Nigeria and France to destabilize Niger.

These accusations, circulated in a viral video, have been labeled as unfounded and rooted in fiction.

In a strongly worded statement, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the claims as “absurd and baseless.”

He emphasised that Nigeria has never engaged in any covert or overt alliance to undermine Niger’s stability.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has consistently demonstrated commitment to diplomacy. Despite the political upheaval in Niger, Nigeria has remained a beacon of peace and regional cooperation, maintaining open dialogue with its neighbor.

The Nigerian Armed Forces, in partnership with the Multinational Joint Task Force, have made significant strides in combating terrorism within the region.

Allegations suggesting Nigeria would conspire with any foreign entity to destabilize Niger are contrary to the nation’s track record as a leader in regional stability efforts.

Nigeria has also actively promoted Niger’s economic development through major projects like the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the Kano-Maradi Railway. Claims that Nigeria would sabotage these initiatives are deemed illogical and counterproductive.

General Tchiani’s assertion about the establishment of a “Lakurawa terrorist headquarters” in Sokoto State, allegedly supported by Nigeria and France, was firmly debunked. Minister Idris pointed out that Nigeria’s recent military operation, Forest Sanity III, directly targeted the Lakurawa threat, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.

“It is inconceivable that Nigeria, a nation investing heavily in combating terrorism, would harbor or support any group threatening its neighbors,” Idris stated.

The Federal Government called on the Nigerien leadership to focus on constructive dialogue rather than resorting to baseless accusations. Attempts to blackmail Nigeria over its principled stance against unconstitutional power seizures in Niger were dismissed as futile.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering regional stability, urging Niger’s leadership to prioritize collaboration over conflict.

“These false allegations are not only misleading but also a dangerous distraction from addressing the real challenges facing Niger,” the statement concluded.

As Nigeria continues to lead efforts against terrorism and transnational threats, the government has urged the public and international partners to disregard unfounded claims and remain united in the pursuit of peace and development in the region.
