Customs Intercept 718 Donkey Skins in Adamawa, Nab Two Suspects

By Ahmed Ahmed

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘D’ of the Nigeria Customs Service has intensified its clampdown on wildlife trafficking with the seizure of 718 pieces of donkey skins in Mubi, Adamawa State, and the arrest of two suspects.

The Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘D’, Abdullahi Shuaibu Ka’ila, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the unit’s headquarters in Bauchi.

The Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘D’, Abdullahi Shuaibu Ka’ila, stated that the unit’s officers made the seizure on December 26, 2025, based on credible intelligence and a coordinated enforcement operation.

According to him, the consignment was concealed in a vehicle intercepted during routine patrols.

The interception resulted in the arrest of the driver and the alleged owner of the illicit goods, who are currently under custody for further investigation.

Ka’ila explained that the operation is in line with the zero-tolerance stance on smuggling being championed by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, particularly against the illegal trade in endangered species.

He pointed out that relevant Nigerian authorities, such as NESREA and the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, prohibit the trade and exportation of donkey skins.

The Comptroller further stated that the seizure demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to international wildlife protection conventions, such as CITES.

He revealed that the Duty Paid Value of the seized items is estimated at N24.3 million and assured that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other applicable laws.

He warned smugglers to desist, stressing that FOU Zone ‘D’, which covers nine states, remains vigilant against all forms of illegal trade.
