Gambia’s Defence Chief Strengthens Military Ties During Saudi Arabia Visit
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Gambia Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Mamat O.A. Cham, is undertaking a series of high-level defence and diplomatic engagements during an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aimed at deepening military cooperation and strategic partnerships.

A major highlight of the visit was a bilateral meeting with his Saudi counterpart, which resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen defence cooperation and enhance institutional collaboration between the armed forces of both countries. The agreement is expected to promote closer ties in training, capacity building, and defence diplomacy.
Lieutenant General Cham also paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary-General of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), where discussions focused on expanding cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence and information sharing, capacity development, and broader regional and international security initiatives.
As part of his programme, the CDS participated in the World Defence Show, touring several defence industry pavilions and exhibition booths. These included Saudi Arabia’s ERAF and ZM Naval, China Xinxing, TET Technologies, and Pakistan’s National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). The engagements provided an opportunity to assess emerging defence technologies and explore potential partnerships with global defence industry players.
The visit underscores the Gambia Armed Forces’ commitment to defence diplomacy, strategic collaboration, and capacity enhancement in support of national and regional security objectives. Lieutenant General Cham is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Gambian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh.
