Disu’s appointment follows the retirement of Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun and is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The Council is expected to meet next week.

Addressing the new police chief during the ceremony, President Tinubu said the decision was based on Disu’s track record and demonstrated dedication. He recalled Disu’s service in Lagos during his tenure as governor, noting his commitment and professionalism.

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical moment, the President urged the Acting IGP to rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and work closely with other security agencies to safeguard the nation.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority,” the President said, pledging his full support.

He charged Disu to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” Tinubu stated, reaffirming his belief that the country would prevail under committed leadership.

The President also paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, thanking him for his service in maintaining law and order. He encouraged him to remain available to offer guidance to his successor, noting that Disu’s success would also form part of his legacy.

Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; AIG Hakeem Odumosu (rtd); senior government officials; and family members of the Acting IGP.

The event underscored the administration’s resolve to strengthen internal security and deepen collaboration among security stakeholders during what the President described as a pivotal period for the nation.
