Tompolo Faces Uncertainty as Tinubu Administration Reviews Pipeline Security Strategy

Former Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, is battling to retain a $35 million pipeline security contract as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu undertakes a broader review of Nigeria’s approach to tackling crude oil theft.

The contract, executed through Tantita Security Services, is estimated at about ₦48 billion annually and has become one of the most politically sensitive arrangements in the country’s oil and gas sector. The review is part of ongoing efforts by the federal government to strengthen transparency, efficiency, and accountability in protecting critical national assets.

Supporters of the arrangement argue that Tantita’s operations have helped curb oil theft through deep local intelligence, strong community networks, and on-the-ground presence in the Niger Delta. They credit the firm with improving crude oil production levels by disrupting illegal tapping and pipeline vandalism.

However, critics have raised concerns over the outsourcing of sensitive national security functions to private entities, questioning oversight mechanisms and the long-term sustainability of such arrangements. They argue that pipeline security should remain firmly within the control of state security institutions.

As the Tinubu administration weighs its options, the outcome of the review is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s oil revenue, security architecture, and relations with host communities in the Niger Delta.
