Two Chinese Container Ships Successfully Navigate Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions

Two Chinese container ships successfully sailed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, marking their second attempt to leave the Gulf after turning back on Friday, according to ship-tracking data. The strategic waterway has been effectively closed since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran on February 28.

MarineTraffic data showed the vessels traveled in close formation through the strait and into open waters, heading toward the Gulf of Oman at elevated speeds. Rebecca Gerdes, a data analyst with Kpler, which owns MarineTraffic, noted, “Both vessels successfully crossed on a second attempt today, marking the first container vessels to leave the Persian Gulf since the start of the conflict, excluding Iranian-flagged ships.”

The vessels are operated by China’s COSCO Shipping Group. Officials from COSCO were not immediately available for comment. On March 25, the company had announced it was resuming bookings for general cargo containers from Asia to Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq.

The successful passage of these vessels comes as global attention remains focused on the conflict’s impact on regional trade routes and international shipping security.
