The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has held a strategic meeting with officials of the United States Mission in Nigeria aimed at deepening collaboration on disaster management and emergency response capacity across the country.

The meeting, held in Abuja, was led by Mr. Murphy Opadotun, Team Lead of the Office of Humanitarian Assistance at the U.S. Mission Nigeria.

During the engagement, the U.S. delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting disaster management efforts in Nigeria and strengthening the capacity of emergency response institutions at both federal and state levels.

According to Hajiya Umar, the delegation conveyed the readiness of the United States Forest Service to resume its training and capacity-building programme for personnel of NEMA and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) nationwide.

The programme is expected to focus on strengthening expertise in the management of Emergency Operations Centres (EOC) and the Incident Command System (ICS), critical components of effective disaster preparedness, coordination and response.

The NEMA Director-General described the development as a significant milestone in the agency’s partnership with the United States Government, noting that enhanced training and technical support would further improve Nigeria’s capacity to respond to emergencies and disasters.

She stated that the renewed collaboration aligns with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in strengthening institutional resilience, disaster preparedness and humanitarian response mechanisms.

Umar emphasized that building the capacity of emergency management personnel remains essential to ensuring timely and coordinated responses to disasters, especially as climate-related incidents and other emergencies continue to pose challenges across the country.

The partnership is expected to enhance operational efficiency within NEMA and SEMAs while promoting the adoption of global best practices in emergency management and incident coordination.

Both parties expressed optimism that the renewed training initiative would further strengthen Nigeria’s disaster management architecture and improve the country’s ability to protect lives and livelihoods during emergencies.
