Scientists Explore Electric Fields as a Potential New Way to Speed Up Wound Healing
Scientists may have uncovered a promising new approach to improving wound healing by using controlled electrical stimulation to guide skin cells toward damaged tissue.
Researchers found that a carefully regulated direct-current electric field could influence the movement of keratinocytes, the cells that make up much of the outer layer of human skin. The phenomenon, known as electrotaxis, causes cells to respond to an electrical field by moving in a particular direction.
In laboratory experiments, electrically stimulated skin cells closed artificial wounds at a rate nearly three times faster than unstimulated cells.
The researchers also tested the approach using a laboratory model designed to mimic impaired wound healing associated with diabetes. In that model, electrical stimulation increased the wound-closure rate from approximately 1.0% per hour to 2.8% per hour, bringing the performance closer to that observed in healthy, unstimulated cells.
The findings suggest that the body’s natural bioelectric signals may play an important role in directing cells during tissue repair. Harnessing these signals could eventually help scientists develop new approaches for treating chronic wounds, particularly those that heal slowly in people with conditions such as diabetes or as a result of ageing.
However, the research is still at an early stage. The experiments were conducted in vitro, meaning in laboratory settings rather than in people. Further studies, including animal research and human clinical trials, will be necessary to determine whether electrical stimulation can safely and effectively be developed into a medical treatment.
If future research confirms the findings, controlled electrical fields could offer an innovative way of helping the body’s own cells reach damaged areas and accelerate the natural healing process.
