COWA Launches Nationwide ‘1,000 Trees in One Hour’ Campaign to Promote Environmental Sustainability

The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has launched a nationwide tree planting campaign aimed at planting 1,000 trees within one hour across multiple locations in Nigeria, as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and community development.

The initiative, scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., is being implemented under the COWA Green Borders sustainability drive and is designed to encourage grassroots participation in climate action.

Organisers said the campaign will bring together volunteers, community members, environmental advocates, and stakeholders at designated planting sites nationwide, with simultaneous activities aimed at achieving the ambitious one-hour target.

The exercise is expected to address pressing environmental challenges such as deforestation, land degradation, and climate change, while also fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among citizens.

Speaking on the initiative, COWA National President, Kikelomo Adeniyi, described the campaign as both symbolic and impactful.

“If we are to secure a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities, we must recognise that environmental stewardship is a shared duty. This initiative is not simply about planting trees; it is about planting hope and restoring our environment,” she said.

Mrs. Adeniyi noted that the campaign aligns with the association’s broader vision of linking environmental action with community development and citizen engagement.

She added that beyond the one-day activity, the initiative is intended to evolve into a sustained movement that promotes ecological awareness and long-term environmental protection across the country.

The campaign is also expected to stimulate broader conversations around ecosystem restoration and strengthen partnerships with environmental stakeholders.

With the launch of the “1,000 Trees in One Hour” campaign, COWA aims to deepen its role in community-based environmental advocacy while encouraging active participation from women, youths, and local communities in safeguarding Nigeria’s environment.
