Woman, Two Children Sustain Severe Burns in Alleged Kano Petrol Attack
A 28-year-old woman, Firdausi Musa, and her two young children have sustained severe burns after her co-wife, Maryam Muhammad, allegedly doused them with petrol and set them ablaze in the Hotoro area of Kano.
The incident reportedly occurred late Monday night at the Mai Allo area of Hotoro quarters, throwing residents into shock. The suspect is currently in police custody at the Mariri Police Division.
The victims, identified as Khadija Yau, 7, and Ismail Yau, 3, are receiving medical treatment alongside their mother at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Dala and Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital respectively.
Their father, Malam Saminu, reportedly sustained burns while attempting to rescue them from the fire and is also undergoing treatment.
Speaking on the incident, Firdausi’s younger brother, Buhari Musa Saad, said the family received a distress call around 3am informing them that his sister, her husband, and the children had been attacked.
According to him, Firdausi had spent less than two weeks in the matrimonial home before the incident occurred.
He explained that the children involved were from her previous marriage and had been living with her in the new home.
Another relative, Rukayya, alleged that Firdausi had previously complained about threats and intimidation from the co-wife before the attack.
She said the victim narrated that the suspect poured petrol on her before setting her on fire.
Rukayya further disclosed that Firdausi had temporarily left the house earlier that day due to repeated threats but later returned following intervention by her husband.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
