Orphaned Baby Hippo Rescued in Kenya After Tragic Loss of Mother

A baby hippopotamus rescued after being found beside its dead mother at a lake in Kenya is now receiving round-the-clock care at a wildlife sanctuary.

The calf, named “Bumpy,” was discovered over the weekend desperately nudging its lifeless mother in an emotional scene that drew concern from wildlife officials and conservationists.

According to Sheldrick Wildlife Trust the orphaned hippo was only a few days old when rescuers arrived. The charity said the young calf has now been placed under specialised care, where keepers are hand-rearing and monitoring its health closely.

The Kenya Wildlife Service, which carried out the rescue operation, said preliminary findings suggest the mother may have died from natural causes.

Wildlife officials explained that hippo calves are highly dependent on their mothers during the early stages of life, making survival in the wild extremely difficult for orphaned newborns without urgent intervention.

Caretakers at the sanctuary are now feeding and rehabilitating Bumpy while ensuring the calf adapts safely to its new environment.

Conservation groups say the rescue highlights the importance of wildlife protection and rapid response efforts aimed at safeguarding vulnerable animals across Kenya’s national parks and lakes.
