Essex Council Faces Criticism Over Pause on Promotion of Pride, Black History Events

ESSEX, UNITED KINGDOM – Reform UK-led Essex County Council has come under criticism following reports that libraries have been instructed to pause the promotion of Pride and Black History-related events through council communication channels.

According to reports, library staff were informed during a briefing that LGBTQ+-themed events and other community awareness campaigns would no longer be advertised through the council’s official marketing platforms while a review is conducted.

Chris Hossack, the councillor responsible for residents and community services, was quoted as saying that organisations promoting events such as International Women’s Day and Black History Month still have opportunities to do so independently, but that the council would not be promoting such campaigns through its libraries.

Responding to the controversy, an Essex County Council spokesperson said the decision involves a temporary pause on promotional content across council-managed communication channels, including social media platforms and newsletters.

The spokesperson stressed that the measure applies broadly to all groups and events while the new administration reviews existing policies and promotional practices. The council also clarified that the pause does not extend to displays or promotional materials placed within library buildings themselves.

However, the move has attracted criticism from rights advocates, community organisations and campaigners who argue that it could reduce the visibility of minority and LGBTQ+ communities.

A spokesperson for Essex Pride described the decision as sending a negative message to LGBTQ+ people and suggested it could contribute to feelings of exclusion.

Meanwhile, campaign group Save Our Libraries Essex questioned the rationale behind limiting promotional activity related to Pride events and other awareness campaigns.

Colchester-based drag performer Shar Cooterie, who has previously hosted family-friendly Drag Storytime events at local libraries, described the decision as politically motivated and argued that the existence and visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals should not be viewed as a political issue.

In a statement, Hossack defended the council’s position, saying public libraries are intended to serve all members of the community equally.

According to him, the council believes libraries should remain inclusive spaces and has therefore chosen to pause promotional activities relating to specific groups or themes through its public-facing communications unless the events are directly related to library services.

The controversy comes amid broader debates surrounding Reform UK’s positions on diversity, inclusion and LGBTQ+ issues.

Earlier this year, Nigel Farage faced criticism after defending remarks made by Reform UK’s Scottish leader, Malcolm Offord, which critics described as homophobic.

Farage has also previously faced criticism over comments regarding same-sex relationships, while some Reform activists attracted attention during a 2024 television documentary for remarks about Pride symbols.

The dispute over library promotions is expected to continue as community groups, campaigners and council officials debate the balance between institutional neutrality and public recognition of diversity initiatives.
