FG Marks 27th Democracy Day, Highlights Tinubu Administration’s Three-Year Milestones

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, national unity, and sustainable development as Nigeria commemorates its 27th Democracy Day and the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at a Democracy Day 2026 press conference held at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, celebrate institutional resilience, and honour those who fought for democratic rule.

Idris said Democracy Day remains a significant event in Nigeria’s national calendar, providing citizens with an opportunity to appreciate the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and leaders who contributed to the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance.

He paid tribute to the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, describing him as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle whose legacy continues to inspire generations.

The minister also acknowledged the contributions of President Tinubu and other democracy activists who played key roles in the pro-democracy movement that led to the return of civilian rule in Nigeria.

According to Idris, Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance represents a major milestone and reflects the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values, strengthen institutions, and promote national development.

He noted that this year’s celebration is particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Renewed Hope Administration, offering an opportunity to assess progress made, review ongoing reforms, and reaffirm the government’s commitment to building a more inclusive and prosperous nation.

“The celebration provides an opportunity to take stock of our progress as a nation, review the impact of ongoing reforms, and reaffirm our collective commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria,” he stated.

The minister explained that the press conference was organised to provide Nigerians and the international community with an overview of the administration’s performance over the past three years, including achievements recorded, challenges encountered, and the vision guiding the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He subsequently invited the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented President Tinubu at the event, to deliver the keynote address on behalf of the Federal Government.

The Democracy Day celebration commemorates Nigeria’s democratic journey and honours the sacrifices of individuals who contributed to the country’s return to democratic governance.
