Seun Kuti Speaks on ‘Nepo Baby’ Label, Says Success Requires More Than Family Connections

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has responded to critics who describe him as a “nepo baby,” acknowledging that family background can create opportunities but insisting that personal effort remains essential to success.

Speaking during an interview on Ada’s Room, Seun said it is unrealistic to ignore the influence of family heritage, arguing that many successful individuals benefit in one way or another from the foundations laid by those before them.

The singer pointed to his late father, Fela Kuti, noting that his upbringing and family background also played a role in shaping his path.

“You will see people online calling me a nepo baby, but even Fela Kuti, if he wasn’t Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s son, he wouldn’t have been Fela. Nothing comes from nothing,” he said.

Seun referenced his grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a renowned activist and one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, as an example of how family influence can help shape opportunities and perspectives.

While acknowledging the advantages that may come with a well-known family name, the Afrobeat star stressed that success ultimately depends on individual effort and performance.

“I might be a nepo baby, but my father is not on stage playing my sax for me,” he said.

Seun’s comments have sparked conversations about privilege, talent and the role family connections play in career success, particularly within the entertainment industry.
