Thai authorities have taken an Australian national into custody following the discovery of the body of a 17-year-old girl inside a suitcase abandoned near a railway track in the resort city of Pattaya.
According to local media reports, the 46-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday at Suvarnabhumi Airport while allegedly attempting to purchase a flight ticket to Perth.
Investigators said the arrest followed the recovery of the teenager’s body from a large suitcase found near a railway line in Pattaya, a popular tourist destination on Thailand’s eastern coast.
Police authorities revealed that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage allegedly showed the suspect transporting a large black suitcase on the back of a motorcycle after leaving a condominium building with the victim several hours earlier.
The footage reportedly became a key piece of evidence in the investigation, helping authorities trace the suspect’s movements before his arrest at the airport.
The Australian national has denied any involvement in the teenager’s death.
Thai police said they are awaiting the outcome of a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death and determine the next course of legal action.
Officials indicated that potential charges under consideration could include murder, child abduction, concealment of a corpse and the abduction of a minor for sexual purposes, depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of family members and completion of investigative procedures.
The case has attracted significant public attention in Thailand and Australia, with investigators continuing to gather forensic evidence and review surveillance footage as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
