The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the World Bank to improve access to safe water, boost irrigated agriculture and enhance food security across Nigeria.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, made this known on Wednesday while receiving a World Bank delegation at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Utsev said the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration places priority on expanding access to safe and sustainable water, improving food production through irrigated agriculture and creating employment opportunities for Nigerians.
He noted that enhanced cooperation with the World Bank would accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) Project, alongside other key projects being executed by the ministry with the support of the international development institution.
The minister also confirmed Nigeria’s participation in the forthcoming Africa Water Forum scheduled to hold this month in N’Djamena, Chad.
According to him, the ministry will use the forum to showcase ongoing reforms in the water sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda, highlight efforts to improve water access in underserved communities and promote investment opportunities in Nigeria’s water resources sector.
Earlier, the World Bank’s Task Team Leader for the SPIN Project, Zack Zieglhifer, and Co-Task Team Leader, Engr. Chinedu Umolu, said their visit was to confirm the ministry’s participation in the Africa Water Forum.
They explained that the forum, organised by West African countries in collaboration with the World Bank and other development partners, will bring together key stakeholders to promote dialogue, strengthen decision-making and mobilise innovative financing to improve water security across Africa.
