Tinubu Approves Up to 80% Salary Increase for Armed Forces Personnel

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, granting pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent in what the Federal Government describes as a major boost to troop welfare.
The salary adjustment, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across various ranks.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. The category includes Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals.
Under the new salary package, personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increment of 80 per cent.
The statement noted that the new pay structure will raise the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion, reflecting an increase of N264 billion.
President Tinubu said the salary review underscores his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in safeguarding the country against insecurity.
He commended members of the Armed Forces for their courage and dedication in confronting banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other security challenges across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President said.
The approval comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to strengthen the nation’s security architecture through enhanced investment in military operations, improved equipment and better welfare packages for personnel engaged in combating insurgency, banditry and other forms of criminality.
The new salary structure is expected to boost morale among troops and reinforce ongoing efforts to improve operational effectiveness in the country’s fight against insecurity.
