Denmark Generates More Than Half of Its Electricity from Wind Power

Denmark has reached a major renewable energy milestone, with wind turbines now generating more than half of the country’s electricity, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leaders in clean energy.

According to the Danish Energy Agency, the country’s extensive network of onshore and offshore wind farms now supplies over 50 per cent of Denmark’s daily electricity needs, powering homes, schools, hospitals and businesses without relying on fossil fuels.

The achievement is the result of decades of investment in renewable energy, a strategy that began in the 1970s after the global oil crisis prompted Denmark to reduce its dependence on imported fuel and strengthen its energy security.

Today, offshore wind farms in the North Sea and hundreds of onshore turbines across the country form the backbone of Denmark’s electricity generation system.

Energy experts say Denmark’s success demonstrates that large-scale wind power can reliably meet a significant share of a nation’s electricity demand when supported by long-term planning, technological innovation and sustained investment.

Danish engineers have continued to improve turbine technology, increasing efficiency and energy output while supporting the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

The development is widely regarded as a model for countries seeking to expand renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy independence through sustainable power generation.
