Iranians Begin Funeral Ceremonies for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
Thousands of Iranians loyal to the Islamic Republic gathered in Tehran on Saturday to begin nearly a week of funeral ceremonies for the country’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The ceremonies come months after Khamenei was reportedly killed during joint United States-Israeli military strikes in late February, an event that triggered a wider regional conflict.
Large crowds assembled in the Iranian capital to pay their final respects as the country commenced official mourning activities, with funeral events expected to continue over several days.
Authorities have organised a series of state ceremonies to honour the late leader, who ruled Iran for more than three decades and played a central role in shaping the country’s political, religious and foreign policy direction.
The funeral rites are taking place amid heightened regional tensions following the conflict that erupted after Khamenei’s reported death.
