NDLEA Receives Research Linking ‘Molly’ Abuse to Infertility, Organ Damage

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo State Command, has received a biomedical research report highlighting the harmful effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), popularly known as “Molly,” on female reproductive health and vital human organs.

The report was presented at the NDLEA State Command Headquarters in Benin City by a research team from Benson Idahosa University (BIU), led by Dr. Success Eferavware.

Presenting the findings, Dr. Eferavware thanked the Commander of Narcotics, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, for the support and cooperation provided to the researchers throughout the study.

According to the report, the abuse of MDMA causes significant damage to vital organs and severely affects female reproductive organs. The research further revealed that the substance contributes to pregnancy loss, fertility challenges and other serious health complications.

Receiving the report, Commander Ofoyeju commended the researchers for what he described as a valuable scientific contribution to the fight against drug abuse.

He pledged to forward the findings to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), noting that the study further reinforces the dangers associated with illicit drug use, particularly among young people.

He observed that MDMA, popularly referred to as “Molly” by many youths, remains one of the substances frequently abused across the country.

According to him, the involvement of university students in producing the research would strengthen public awareness campaigns by sending a powerful message to young people about the consequences of substance abuse.

Commander Ofoyeju also praised the research team for returning the unused tablets of the drug obtained for the study, describing the gesture as a demonstration of integrity and professionalism worthy of emulation.

He encouraged the researchers to publicise their findings widely and undertake similar studies on other commonly abused substances.

The research team included Arheghan Yolanda Osemen, Irabor Ehizojie Great and Ogor Treasure Efe.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA Edo State Command also hosted delegations from the Nigerian Students and Youth Association (NISAYA), Edo State Chapter, and the Social Watch Anti-Drug Abuse Advocacy (SWADAA).

Speaking during the visit, NISAYA National President, Comrade Ephraim Eghosa Osemwengi, said the association sought to strengthen collaboration with the NDLEA in promoting drug abuse prevention and creating greater awareness among students and young people across Edo State.

Commander Ofoyeju welcomed the initiative and urged students to remain focused despite life’s challenges, stressing that resilience and perseverance are key to achieving success.

He called on youths to become active advocates of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign in their schools and communities.

The SWADAA delegation, led by its Edo State Commandant, Comrade Mrs. Kehinde Osifo Ayo, also sought closer collaboration with the NDLEA in public sensitisation, rehabilitation advocacy, community-based interventions and capacity building.

Mrs. Osifo emphasised the importance of sustained public enlightenment in tackling substance abuse and appealed for continuous training opportunities to enhance the organisation’s anti-drug advocacy efforts.

Responding, Commander Ofoyeju assured both organisations of the NDLEA’s readiness to partner with credible stakeholders to strengthen the nationwide campaign against drug abuse and promote healthier communities.
