Tribute to Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The passing of President Muhammadu Buhari marked the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and military history. He was a soldier, statesman and two-time national leader whose life was devoted to the service of his country.

Born on 17 December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari hailed from the Fulani community. He received his early education in Katsina before joining the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna in 1962. He later attended military institutions in the United Kingdom, India and the United States, building a distinguished military career.

Buhari served Nigeria in several strategic military positions before becoming the country’s military Head of State from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985. Years later, he embraced democratic politics, contesting the presidency several times before making history in 2015 as the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting Nigerian president through the ballot box. He was re-elected in 2019 and served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President until 2023.

Throughout his public life, Buhari was widely recognised for his discipline, personal integrity and commitment to fighting corruption. His administration prioritised infrastructure development, agricultural reforms, anti-corruption efforts, social investment programmes and the campaign against insurgency and insecurity. Though his years in office attracted both praise and criticism—as is common with national leadership—his dedication to Nigeria and belief in national unity remained steadfast.

Beyond politics, President Buhari was known for his modest lifestyle, humility and deep sense of duty. His quiet demeanour, simple way of life and commitment to public service earned him the respect of millions of Nigerians and admirers around the world.

His journey from military officer to democratically elected President remains one of the most remarkable transitions in Nigeria’s political history, reflecting his belief in constitutional governance and democratic ideals.
