From Jos to Makkah: The Inspiring Journey of Aliyu Abdullahi Obobo, the Nigerian Cyclist Who Refused a Multi-Million Naira Offer for His Bicycle

For many Muslims, the journey to Makkah is a lifelong spiritual dream. For Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi Obobo, it became an extraordinary test of faith, endurance and determination that captured the admiration of Nigerians and people across the world.

A native of Plateau State, Obobo set out from Jos in February 2021 on a remarkable mission—to travel thousands of kilometres to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on nothing but a bicycle to perform Umrah.

His journey would last almost two years.

Cycling across international borders, he travelled through Niger Republic, Chad and Sudan, battling harsh weather, scorching desert temperatures, difficult terrain, security challenges and lengthy immigration and visa procedures. Despite the numerous obstacles, he remained committed to completing the pilgrimage.

In December 2022, Obobo finally arrived in Saudi Arabia, where he successfully performed the Umrah, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable personal journeys undertaken by a Nigerian pilgrim in recent years.

His story quickly attracted widespread attention. Many saw his bicycle not merely as a means of transportation but as a symbol of perseverance, sacrifice and unwavering faith.

Following the completion of his pilgrimage, Obobo disclosed that an Egyptian pilgrim offered him 200,000 Saudi Riyals—worth roughly ₦40 million at the time—to buy the bicycle that had carried him across thousands of kilometres.

Despite the substantial offer, he politely declined.

According to Obobo, the bicycle had become priceless. It represented years of sacrifice, resilience, trust in God and an unforgettable spiritual journey. Rather than sell it, he expressed his wish for the bicycle to be preserved in a Nigerian museum, where it could inspire future generations to pursue their dreams with courage and determination.

His remarkable adventure did not diminish his passion for exploration. Before his death, Obobo reportedly announced plans for another ambitious expedition—cycling from Nigeria to Dubai, continuing his tradition of undertaking long-distance journeys driven by purpose rather than comfort.

Sadly, Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi Obobo passed away in September 2024 after a brief illness, bringing an end to a life that inspired countless people through his uncommon determination.

Although his dream of cycling to Dubai remained unfulfilled, his journey from Jos to Makkah continues to stand as one of the most inspiring stories of faith and endurance in modern Nigerian history.

Obobo’s legacy is not measured by the distance he travelled alone, but by the lesson he left behind: that true wealth is not always found in money. Sometimes, it is found in the courage to pursue a dream, the resilience to overcome impossible odds, and the faith to keep moving forward when the road ahead seems endless.
